About Hope Rock Farm

Prole, Iowa (15 minutes south of West Des Moines)

Why Hope Rock Farm?

Hope Rock Farm is a small regenerative family farm just south of Norwalk, Iowa.

It began with our own quest for real, nourishing, thoughtfully raised food that was worthy of our family's table.

We quickly realized we weren’t the only ones looking for food we could trust.  So began Hope Rock Farm.

The beginnings of Hope Rock Farm

In 2025, we purchased the land that became Hope Rock Farm. There was no water, no electricity, and no fencing - just a lot of dreams and work ahead!

With countless hours of hard work we are slowly developing the farm. Today, Hope Rock Farm is home to pastured turkeys, sheep, pigs, and three livestock guardian donkeys.  We are excited to expand the farm in the years to come.

What started as a search for better food for our own family has grown into a farm where we can share that same pursuit with other families.

Meet your farmers

Frank grew up in Urbandale, Iowa.  He traded his 20-year engineering career for farm life and is now found building fence, feeding animals, and taking on plenty of the dirty work that comes with farming.

Elizabeth grew up on a small dairy farm in Northeast Iowa and is a proud fifth-generation Iowa farmer. She keeps busy behind the scenes, sharing our farm’s story through the website, social media, and email.

Our seven children pitch in whenever they can, making Hope Rock Farm truly a family endeavor.

Why the name Hope Rock Farm?

When deciding on our farm name, we decided to give a nod to each of our parents who so richly blessed us in life.

"Hope" comes from Elizabeth's family farm name, "Hope Hollow Farm."  Like her parents who started a farm in the 1980s, we too hope in the bright future of our farm.

"Rock" comes from the Rock Island Railroad that used to run through our farm property.  We tied that with Frank's family's interest in railroads to get the second half of our name.  (It is interesting to note that there are very few rocks on our farm!)

Practicing Regenerative Farming in Central Iowa

At Hope Rock Farm, we practice regenerative farming with a goal of providing nourishing food while improving and stewarding the land.

Hope Rock Farm practices:

  • Rotational grazing:  mimicking natural wildlife movement which allows the land to rest
  • Chemical free production:  avoiding fertilizer, chemicals, hormones, and unnecessary antibiotics and vaccines
  • Grass feeding:  our sheep (and eventually beef) are fed only grasses or stored grasses (hay) while on the farm
  • Pasture-raised production:  our animals spend their days roaming and foraging on diverse pastures

The benefits of these practices are:

  • Optimal fatty acid balance:  pastured meats contain 2-5 times more anti-inflammatory Omega-3 fatty acids than other methods of production
  • Elevated Conjugated Linoleic Acid:  supplies more than 300 - 500% more CLA which is linked to cardiovascular health, immune system support, and lean muscle maintenance
  • Rich in phytonutrients:  more concentrated antioxidants like Vitamin A and E
  • More Vitamin D:  significantly higher Vitamin D3 in pasture-raised livestock fat tissues
  • Micronutrient density:  more bioavailable levels of zinc, iron, selenium, potassium, B12, niacin
  • Healthier fat profile:  lower in saturated fat and higher in heart-healthy mono-unsaturated fasts and beneficial saturated fats (stearic acid)
